One of the fastest ways to rank higher on Google is to use what I call my Quick Wins SEO strategy.

The underlying concept of my Quick Wins SEO strategy is…
It’s much easier to improve the rankings of the content you already have than it is to rank higher for brand new content, especially for new websites or for highly competitive keywords.
And sites with higher levels of Domain Authority tend to rank higher, faster.
So, rather than always chasing new keywords by creating new content…
You should work on improving the Domain Authority of your website, and the rankings of the content you already have.
My Quick Wins SEO strategy works best when you use this strategy for content that’s already ranked in Google (remember, it’s typically easier to improve your current rankings than it is to rank new content).
However, it’s also a great way to jumpstart your rankings for your new content as well.
Here are the 6 simple steps that are the foundation of my Quick Wins SEO strategy:
Step 1:
Compile a list of the pages on your website that are currently receiving traffic from Google.
Step 2:
Figure out which keyword phrases are currently sending traffic to those individual pages.
- Tip: You can use Google Analytics and other keyword research tools such as SEMrush or ahrefs to analyze the content on your website and figure out which keyword phrases are sending your pages traffic.
Step 3:
Determine the rankings of those keyword phrases and focus the rest of your research on the ones that are currently ranking in Google for the top 4 – 50 spots (the closer they are to the first page, the better… so, I’d start with the top 20 spots and work may way down from there).
Step 4:
Pick the keyword phrases in step 3 that you’d like to rank the highest for that also have the least amount of competition from a backlinks standpoint (these are your target keywords).
- Tip: You can also use keyword research tools to determine the rankings of your pages for different keywords, as well as to estimate just how hard (or easy) it should be to rank for a given keyword phrase.
Step 5:
Optimize the page(s) from step 3 for the keywords that you would like to rank highest for.
- Tip: You can use software like MarketMuse , Cognitive SEO or Ryte to analyze your content and make suggestions on how to improve it from an SEO standpoint.
Step 6:
Build high-quality backlinks to that to that page using variations of your target keyword phrase(s) as the anchor text.
- Tip: Blogger Outreach and guest posting is a proven way to build high-quality backlinks to your website.
Your goal isn’t to have just another plain-old “author resource” box in the article.
Your goal is to have an editorial style “in-content” link placed in the article that links back to your website as an “Authority” on the subject.
Here’s how the basic Blogger Outreach process works:
- Search the internet for well-established websites in markets related to yours that also have high levels of Domain Authority.
- Tip: Use the MozBar for Chrome plugin for a quick and easy way to measure a website’s Domain Authority.
- Reach-out to the potential candidates you come across during your search… pitch them on story ideas that would benefit their readers, and… offer to create 100% unique content for their website.
- Tip: You can use software like BuzzStream to help you with your blogger outreach campaigns (for locating and building relationships with high domain authority websites in your market).
- When you find one that’s willing to take you up on your offer… create a high-quality 100 % unique article or blog post that is custom-tailored to the other website’s audience, and have them publish it on their website.
- Tip: Be sure to include an editorial-style “in content” link in the article that links back to related content on your website (these are some of the most powerful types of backlinks you can get).
Here’s one final tip for you…
Google has told us that backlinks are one of the top three most important ranking factors for their search results.
So, if you want higher rankings (and all that free traffic that comes along with higher rankings)… start building your backlinks!

Hey guys, it’s Jeff Johnson with JeffJohnsonMarketing.com, and today I’m going to teach you my quick wins SEO strategy step by step… which means today you will learn my six simple steps to ranking higher on Google.
I will also tell you which of the software tools that you can use to make your job even easier, including several that won’t cost you a single penny.
Plus, I will tell you how to download your absolutely free Quick Wins SEO PDF Cheat Sheet.
569% Increase In Free Traffic
I first taught this strategy to my students back in the fall of 2017, and I taught it as part of a case study, and I applied it to just two of the pages on one of my affiliate blogs. Then I simply walked away just to see what would happen. Well, within six months my traffic was up 569%. That’s a 569% increase in free traffic for making changes to just two of the pages. That’s it.
In January of 2019, that website was still generating record levels of free traffic before it finally started to slow down one and a half years later.
This isn’t some sort of short-term traffic trick. This is a long-term traffic solution.
My quick wins SEO strategy is based on two fundamental concepts. First, Google has told us that content and backlinks are two of the top three most important ranking factors. Second, my experience has been that it’s typically easier to improve the rankings of your existing content than it is to rank higher for new content, especially for newer websites.
Step #1
Pages That Are Currently Receiving Traffic
In step number one, the first thing that I want you to do is I want you to compile a list of pages on your website that are currently receiving traffic from Google. Some of the tools that you can use a free including Google Analytics Dashboard for WordPress, Google Analytics, and the Google search console. However, there are certain things that Google can’t do that some of my favorite paid tools can. Some of my favorite paid tools that I use are SEMrush, Moz Pro, and Ahrefs. Most of these paid tools offer some type of free or low-cost full-blown trial version, so you definitely want to check them out.
Step #2
Keywords Sending You Traffic
In step number two, you want to compile a list of the keywords that have set each of the pages from step one traffic in the last 30 days, and once again it is generally easiest to do that by using tools such as SEMrush, Moz Pro, and Ahrefs.
Step #3
Your Current Rankings On Google
In step number three, I want you to compile a list of your current rankings on Google for the keyword phrases from step number two. The closer those rankings are to the first page of the search results, the easier it should be to improve the rankings. I want you to narrow that list down to only include keyword phrases that you’re currently ranking in positions 4 through 30. You could apply my strategy to the keywords that are currently ranked in the top three positions, but the easiest improvements and rankings will typically come from positions 4 through 30, and this is all about getting those quick wins that we’ve been talking about.
Step #4:
Keywords You’d Like To Rank Higher For
In step number four, you want to pick the keyword phrases from step number three that you’d like to rank the highest for that also had the least amount of competition from a backlink standpoint. These are your target keyword phrases. Generally speaking, it’s easier to outrank your competition when they have fewer backlinks pointing to the content on their websites.
The good news is that each one of my favorite tools also include keyword difficulty indicators. Those are numerical values where they run calculations on your target keyword phrases and on your competitors’ pages, and they estimate the difficulty of those keyword phrases. They’ll let you know… “here’s a list of keywords that we feel will be the easiest for you to rank for, and here’s a list of keywords that we feel it will be more difficult for you to rank for”. Then obviously you want to choose the ones that they say should be the easiest for you to rank for.
Note: The Keyword Difficulty score is NOT the only factor to consider when evaluating a keyword phrase. You should also look at the keyword phrase’s click through rate for PPC vs. SERPS, the Domain Authority of the websites in the top 3 results, the number and quality of incoming links to those to the top websites, the search intent of the person making the query, featured snippets, etc.
Step #5
Re-Optimize Your Pages
Step number five is one of the top two most important steps in this entire process. In step number five, that’s where you re-optimize your existing website pages for the keywords from step number four that you’d like to rank higher for. The pages that you want to optimize are the pages that you identified back in step number two that were already receiving traffic from each of your target keywords.
It’s not about adding the keywords to the page… it’s about writing 100% original high-quality content that focuses in on the topics related to those keyword phrases. I was able to produce that 569% increase in traffic by adding approximately 500 words of new content to the front page of that blog, and by also adding a few new sentences to one of the other existing blog posts. That’s it.
Some of the tools that you can use include Ahrefs, SEMrush and Moz Pro because they will give you some additional keywords that you may wish to add your pages, but really what you want to do is to use more highly focused content optimization tools like Market Muse, Cognitive SEO and Ryte. Or, you could simply do what I did in this particular instance and you can hire a good writer that knows how to create SEO friendly content.
Step #6
Build High-Quality Backlinks
Step number six is also one of the two most important steps in the entire process. You need to build high quality backlinks to each of the pages from step number five because, remember, Google has told us that content and backlinks are two of the top three most important ranking factors when it comes to ranking higher in the search results.
If you want to rank higher, you must build backlinks, and that’s a very big part of this entire strategy.
Now, I know we’ve covered a lot of ground today, but don’t worry. I put together a Quick Wins SEO PDF Cheat Sheet for you that includes everything that we’ve talked about today as well as some additional bonus tips about building high quality backlinks to your website.

It’s a great tactic to get solid growth with client sites as quickly as possible without having to wait for the content production team to get growth from new content.
I’ve never seen it documented as a case study with proven growth rates, though. Good job!
